JNI to Use Tensilica Technology in Next Generation Fibre Channel Controller ASICs

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 2001--Tensilica® Inc and JNI® Corporation (Nasdaq:JNIC), announced today that JNI has licensed Tensilica's Xtensa(TM) technology and plans to incorporate it into a System-on-Chip Fibre Channel Controller product. JNI Corporation is a leading manufacturer of enterprise-level storage area network (SAN) products and Fibre Channel based host bus adapters (HBA). Tensilica, Inc. is the leading provider of extensible, configurable processor technology. By utilizing Tensilica's technology in its next-generation Fibre Channel products, JNI will provide superior solutions to both its HBA and IC customers.

``We chose Tensilica's technology over several available RISC processor core options after an extensive technical evaluation,'' said Sassan Teymouri, vice president of the JNI Semiconductor Division. ``Among other reasons, Xtensa has a proven high performance capability in 0.18-micron technology, and provides a completely integrated suite of software development tools.

``Fibre Channel technology is expanding rapidly,'' Teymouri continued. ``We want to offer a class of extremely programmable and flexible controllers that meets a wide range of requirements from SAN-to-WAN applications to Storage Virtualization applications. Xtensa's unique extensibility feature will facilitate tailoring the processor to accommodate specific protocols and streamline its performance - two very important requirements for our program.''

Bernie Rosenthal, Tensilica's vice president of marketing and business development, said ``This engagement validates our Xtensa processor's applicability in the rapidly growing Storage Area Network (SAN) space. By joining other industry leaders using Xtensa in the set-top box, wireless and data communications markets, JNI demonstrates the flexibility of our technology. We welcome JNI as a valued customer and partner.''
